Layering leopard…

Fall is in full swing and winter is just around the corner. That means that layering is my first priority when getting ready every morning. When I’m in California, it’s not as much of an issue, but New York City definitely has me thinking ahead about how I can be most comfortable and stylish with whatever weather the day may bring. One of my favorite ways to layer smart is to go for three pieces on top, and a long jean or skirt/tight combo on bottom. It’s an easy outfit formula that any woman can emulate from garments she already has in her wardrobe as well.

Here, I’ve decided to spotlight my new satin blazer from Banana Republic. The perfect top layer for a daytime brunch or shopping appointment in CA, or just the right second layer underneath a shaggy jacket during a NYC winter. My base shell is actually a feline-inspired piece as well. The key to pulling off patterns that are so similar is to keep one macro (or large-scale) and one micro (or smaller-scale.) From a distance, the jacket itself can appear almost like a solid, so it doesn’t confuse the eye. Upon a closer look, the details play nicely with each other. This doesn’t always work by mixing two similar patterns together. It’s definitely a trial and error system, but don’t be afraid to play around with some of the things in your closet to see if there’s a hidden surprise in there. Sometimes you don’t know the gems you have until you actually try them on together.

Because the jacket and top are so busy, the rest of the outfit needed to stay minimal. My dark wash flared jeans from Alice + Olivia definitely nod back to my forever ’70s-inspired style, and elongate the leg as well.  This camel colored clutch is the perfect highlight to the hues in the blouse. This goes to show that no matter how small an accessory is, it can really pull an outfit together. If I don’t rely on a bag or clutch to do this, I can always count on a pair of shoes to do so! That’s why it’s important to invest in neutral colored accessories, and to have a few options on hand to grab on your way out the door. I topped off this look with a pair of classic aviators and small jewelry to draw a bit of attention upwards as well.

Whether you’re a leopard fan or not, it’s easy to create a look that’s pulled together and versatile that works for you by paying attention to a few simple things: proportion and fit. These shapes — a cinched waist, a medium or low neckline, and an elongated leg are going to flatter nearly every body type and look great for any occasion!
