With Thanksgiving upon us, it’s only fitting that I post about a piece in my wardrobe that I’m most thankful for — this embroidered longline coat from Alice + Olivia. I refuse to blend into the sea of black and navy coats and this coat is my hero piece of the season. Its bright hue, intricate detailing and flattering shape are just a few of the reasons that I grab for this outer layer from my closet time and time again. What’s more? It’s so cozy. And standing up to New York City blasts of wind is a must at this time of year.
So it has all of the things that I normally look for in my garments: an interesting pattern, a flattering shape, a bright color, and a quick nod to the ’60s and ’70s. But what about the versatility factor? While hot pink isn’t the easiest color to pair with some of my favorite wardrobe items, it’s important to remember that a coat is an outfit all its own! Once you get to your destination, the coat comes off. And you get to show off your stylish ensemble underneath! However, if the coat is an outfit on its own, it needs to be styled as such. That’s why I went ahead and belted at the middle, swiped my vintage clutch from the dresser and topped everything off with a conductor hat. It’s a very “London” way to wear the garment, especially when I’m in California and New York.
While some women may hesitate to wear a coat like this on a daily basis, I’d have to say that I love wearing it everywhere (yes, even to work)….especially since my only job at holiday gatherings is to show up in a fabulous outfit and drink the wine! I have it draped over my favorite pair of dark rinse bell bottoms and a black tee here, but I could easily wear it out for an evening of dancing and drinks as well. It’s very memorable, but I like that about it and this coat is definitely worth posting on Instagram more than once.
