Summers are a great time to travel, and each destination gives you a different backdrop to style a different outfit and look. This shoot was in a topiary garden in the beautiful seaport town of Newport, Rhode Island and I knew just the outfit that would compliment the lush greenery and marvelous homes.
My go-to piece for summer is a pleated maxi skirt. Wearing pieces with movement is most comfortable during those hot and humid days of summer. The flowy pleats create some nice dimensions, while the movement of the skirt — especially near the hemline — adds an almost ethereal element to the overall look. This buttery metallic acts as a neutral, so I’m free to play with colors as I please.
The top, skirt, and my trusty Ralph Lauren wedges create a feminine canvas that allows for a bit of an edgy offset. Cropped leather jackets and bombers are huge trends this season, and added some edgy contrast to the softness of the overall look. This lightweight leather jacket from Alice + Olivia is one of the most versatile things in my closet, and also serves as the perfect transition piece from summer to fall. It’s not too heavy on a sunny day, and still does the trick on a breezy evening. I can also wear it for an evening out with cropped jeans and a metallic blouse. I could even throw it on over a button down and midi skirt for a work meeting… And how cute is the embroidered back!!!
When you’re traveling, make sure to pack pieces that are easy to wear and easy to layer. This outfit is effortless, yet feels pulled together . The key to achieving this look is in the details — pleats, appliques, texture, stitching. Stay away from things that need steaming or ironing, and always finish off the outfit with a piece of jewelry or hair accessory. In an easy look like this, you can be Instagram-ready without taking hours of prep. Keep things simple, pay attention to details, and enjoy your vacation!
