The transitional trench…
The iconic trench coat started with humble but noble beginnings….as a garment meant to replace outerwear that was bulky, hot and smelly.

Trench coats were designed initially for soldiers to protect them from inclement weather and it was comfier, lighter, warmer and better ventilated than its predecessors. While countless fashion trends have come and gone, this long, double-breasted jacket with style and functionality has survived the test of time.
Today designers have given us bolder seasonal choices adding different colors, fabrics, and silhouettes. What was once strictly utilitarian is now a fashion forward wardrobe staple…..and thank goodness for that!
I admittedly have a small trench coat collection, that includes bright yellow, bold florals, neon, and I recently added this classic Karen Millen plaid coat to the mix. The menswear inspired print paired back with black trousers and nude heels is just what the Autumn season calls for. I swapped out the belt that comes with it for this caramel croc belt as it brings out the gold and black buttons. Details are everything and Karen Millen does this so well, which is why I adore the brand.
*Stylist tip- throw a trench coat over a shimmery cocktail dress for those oh so chic holiday parties!
