Varsity rules…

Leaves are falling, school buses are running, and pumpkin spice lattes are back….it’s sweater weather, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic! Cable knits, turtlenecks and shaggy cardigans will all debut from my closet this fall, but on the first breezy day this year, I was excited to don something a little different: the varsity sweater. Iconic and timeless, the varsity sweater has been around for decades. Designers reinvent the iconic style year after year with their signature twists, so it was only a matter of time before one of my favorite brands (Alice + Olivia) joined the club.

Alice + Olivia does what I love best – mixing the classic and the unexpected to create high quality, unique statement pieces. This cardigan is no exception with its understated contrast detailing and adorable fur sleeves. They’re not too over the top, but they’re enough to set a black sweater apart in a New York City crowd. Inspired by the essence of this statement piece, I created a monochromatic outfit that’s an elevated version of “back to school”. Because where else does a varsity sweater belong?

A little bit of varsity prep should only be complimented by something a little bit tougher. It sounds like just the right opportunity to incorporate some rock n’ roll. I’ve paired my cardigan with a graphic band tee and some leather pants to create a laid back and edgy vibe. This back-to-school-worthy ensemble wouldn’t be complete without two of the things students need most – a killer pair of sneakers and a stylish backpack. Mile-high Nikes take the place of my staple platform heels this week, and a typical vintage clutch has been replaced by a chic mini backpack. Rest assured that no matter which accessories you choose to pair with an outfit like this, you’re set with a comfortable and casual workwear alternative until the weather gets hot again.
